I believe teaching is as much a process of sharing, guidance and learning, as learning is a process of discovery, experimentation and teaching of fellow peers. A student’s success is born from a culmination of lived experience, exchange of ideas, exploration, knowledge, experimentation and failure. As an educator, it is my role to encourage the exploration of ideas, to share my knowledge and to facilitate a dialogue among students, faculty and the community in which we share.
I believe that the creative process involves an ever emerging and diversified range of activities. A successful artist is able to put idea and concept above style, genre or medium by utilizing an expanded studio practice. This expanded studio practice could include: collaboration both within and beyond their field of experience; exploration of new ideas, mediums and technology; criticism, discussion and writing.
With an expanded studio practice, students are better equipped to choose the medium, venue or outlet that best serves their individual ideas. A multi-faceted approach to art education and creation enables a promising artist to draw from an extensive tool set in order to best serve their ideas and concepts. As new generations of artists are coming into their own with a basic understanding and familiarity of technology, it is important for a professor to be able to impart an understanding of what technology means.
